Snorkel 1 and Snorkel 2

Snorkel 1 and Snorkel 2
Two genes unique to deepwater rice plants that enable them to survive flooding by growing longer stems.

A team of Japanese scientists, led by Motoyuki Ashikari, have identified twosnorkel genes that cause some rice plants to grow longer stems (or snorkels) in response to flooding, allowing them to survive, Reutersreported:

In their experiment, Ashikari’s team analysed the genes of a deepwater rice variety and found two genes that were unique to the plant.
“The genes Snorkel 1 and Snorkel 2 are only in the deepwater variety but not in the non-deepwater variety,” he said.
Deepwater rice plants are currently planted in areas prone to flooding, but their yield is much lower than that of more flood-susceptible rices. The scientists discovered that snorkel genes could successfully be inserted into higher-yielding rices thereby allowing them to survive in deeper water.
The BBC’s Sudeep Chand quoted Ashikari, who described the impact of their findings as “huge,” and wrote:
It could … boost the production of rice in Asia and Africa, where up to 40% of crops are subject to flash floods or deep water.
